Earth Hour 2008

Earth Hour was a great success this past month. I was shocked to see when I logged onto Facebook today that there are people who are trying to make Earth Hour a monthly event. Good job whoever started this, kudos.
The event itself has more than 20,000 people and growing.
let's see how far we can take this, even though I know there are skeptics, there is a possibility for something really good to come from this.
Turn off your lights... AGAIN

PS. It's also my boyfriends birthday.. I'm almost positive we'll have the lights off anyways.. wink wink..

I found your camera

I like to randomly search YouTube occasionally just in case I see something intriguing or funny or ridiculous that I can share with my friends and have a good giggle.
Today I saw a video about a guy named Matt Prepost from University of Winnipeg who started a blog about reuniting people with their lost cameras. Being a person who loses shit constantly I was instantly enamoured with the project. I do hope that my half-a-dozen cameras I've lost will turn up here some day.

Check out the site! You never know, your long lost camera or pictures might be there.

Get Activist! Podcast and Link.

In attempt to understand the meaning and function of outdoor advertisements in big cities we've created a podcast in response to our documentary "A Void: A Documentary on visual pollution."

We live in a world that had medical miracles, put a man on the moon, has discovered new species, and many many other miraculous findings yet we walk around oblivious to the interconnectedness of our every action, breath, movement. Advertisements aren't only using up our worlds of vital resources but it's pollution to our visual space.

Take back your visual space. Get activist!

Toronto Erotic Arts Festival

A great sexual health and exploration store on Queen West Come As You Are are hosting a great event this February, right before Valentine's Day. It's Toronto's Fourth Annual Erotic Arts Blender Feb 5 through till the 10th.

This event isn't for your average teen who wants to see Jenna Jameson do unholy things with inanimate objects. This is a mature event where people from all over the city and GTA are invited to take part in something that "challenges the norms of gender, sexuality and body image. These issues are linked to larger systems of oppressions such as class, race and ability. Erotic Blender has been created to bring artists from various communities together with this understanding."

I decided to include this into my blog because my art is going to be a part of the show! That's right! I paint erotic silhouettes of couples in mid-coitus. You'll just have to stop by and see for yourself!

R.U.C.K.U.S

Youth Action Network organized a Youth Activist Anti-Racism Conference Saturday November 23-24th at the University of Toronto. Youth from all over the city came and participated in political, social debates regarding many shapes and forms of racism.

I suggest you check out their website - join a movement like this one whose focus is on youth and awareness.

Newmindspace

My roommate told me about a giant ligthsaber fight last Friday in front of the ROM.
I then proceeded to laugh and ask if she was serious. She was..
Last Friday, Newmindspace - a event organizer that focuses on reclaiming public space - had a lightsaber battle with more than 200 people in attendance.
They also organize giant pillow fights, subway parties, public art installations, and city wide capture the flag. It's simply run by two individuals under the age of 25.
On their website they give instructions on how to run these events in your city and what upcoming events there are.
They do not work for cash, but donations and volunteer hours from their faithful fans.

I encourage you to look at their site - maybe even join in, or organize your own event.
